Chapter 1 o:

Lilly

I hate being on the run; even more then I hate the way everyone used to treat me like a child. I was absentmindedly playing with the grass next to my legs as a looked up at the thick green canopy casting shadows on the ground around me.  How much longer till this would be over? I just want to go back home with my family, my little sister, Emma, was just born.
Wait. Why do I keep forgetting that small little detail? I can never go back home.
As I was getting lost in a daydream of everything being back to normal I heard a noise. Nothing big, just a snap of a twig. I quickly jump to my feet and grab my backpack of supplies and quickly attach my blade to my hip. I take a quick look around and then start running as fast as I can. I keep running, dodging trees and low hanging branches. I hear the footsteps behind me. My heart starts racing.
I don’t know how long I have been running but my lungs feel as though they are about to explode. I keep pushing forward but I hear the footsteps closing in. My legs are crying for a break, but if I stop for even a second the pursuer will catch up. My heart starts pounding in my ears and my throat is so dry I am starting to taste blood. I keep running forward, but now I hear running towards me. My mind is racing. How do I get out of this? If they are in front of me, I may be running right into them…how do I know I am not completely surrounded?
All of a sudden I hear someone scream, “LILLY. DUCK” I duck as fast I can and end up falling. I cushion my fall by catching myself in a roll. Overhead I hear the sound of something swooshing right past my head and I look up. It can’t be. He should still be back in the village. I’m just imagining things. He isn’t actually here. I was just in a tight spot, so I hallucinated him. All these thoughts ran through my head within a second then I heard the loud thud of a body hitting the ground. Do I dare look over to see the pursuer?
I attempt to but I’m too transfixed on Alex. Why is he here? He comes running over to me.
“Hey Lil. You all right?” he gives me that devilish grin that always graces his face when he finds things amusing. I stared up at him, taking in everything from his stormy grey eyes to his defined jaw line, to his dirty grey tee-shirt that he loves so much. I haven’t seen him in, what was it, a month now? He still looks exactly the same. Wait. Why is he here?
            “Alex?”

            “Yes Lil?”

“Stop calling me Lil. You know I hate it.”

“Whatever you say, Lil.” I shot him a warning glance. He just smiled back.

            “What are you doing here?”

“What’s it look like? I’m saving your little behind.”

“Thanks for that, but seriously. Why are you here? How did you find me?”

He looked sheepish and hid his face a little before he responded, “Well, don’t take this the wrong way Lil. It’s not that I didn’t think you could. I just wanted to make sure-.”

I cut him off, “Can you get to the point Alex?”

“I followed you when you left to make sure nothing happened to you.” He blurted out. When he saw my horrified look he quickly added, “I promised your mother I would keep you safe! It’s her fault! I tried telling her you wouldn’t want anyone looking after you,” then he mumbled under his breath, “Even though you needed it.”

“What was that last part?” I shot him a glare.

He walked away and started rummaging around the ground till he got a huge pile of sticks; then started making a tepee formation before setting them on fire with matches he retrieved from his own pack. He then stood up and walked over to the body on the ground and pulled the tomahawk loose from the person’s skull.

“This guy has been following you for a couple days. I was waiting for when he would finally attack.”

“Wait really? How did I not notice him before?”

“He was keeping to the trees. He probably noticed you staring up at the trees and tried getting down. That’s when you heard the twig break.”

“How did you know I heard a twig break?” I gave him a quizzical look.

“I told you. I was following you.”

“You shouldn’t have followed me here Alex. If the village knew you came, practically, with me you would be shunned, just as I am.” I pulled my knees to my chest and buried my face in my arms. The sadness returns, and I realize how alone I really am. I wish they didn’t find out! It was supposed to our little secret. If only Hazel wasn’t in the woods that day.
“Lilly.” Alex’s voice brought me out of my trance.

            “What?”

            “What’s wrong?”

“It’s just. I hate feeling so alone. Knowing my entire town is against me, because of my,” The word caught in my throat, “gift. If we hadn’t been experimenting in the woods! None of this would have happened. It’s all my fault that now I can’t see my family. Why would you want to stay here with me in the cold when you could easily go back to the village with your family? Stay safe and warm, and not have to worry about the stupid girl you used to know.”
“Hey. Hey Lilly. You are not stupid. Plus I would never leave you. Not just because I made that promise to your mom, but because you’re my best friend. I wouldn’t leave you no matter how weird you are.” Great. Not only did I find out he was following me, but I was also just placed in the friend zone.
“Thanks, but seriously Alex. You had a future! You could be finishing school and getting a job. Meet a nice girl and start a family. Let’s face it. I wouldn’t be able to do that. I’m to- to different. I’m known as the weirdo. No guy in their right mind would ever consider starting a family with me, and you know it! You shouldn’t have followed me Alex.”
“Lilly. Just shut up! You don’t know when to stop talking. Now the sun is setting can you just set up camp for the night?” I groaned in response and started ruffling through my bag to start up a make shift camp by throwing a piece of canvas over a low hanging branch as a make shift tent. I took my sleeping bag and laid it inside on the ground and lay down on top of it.
My eyes were starting to feel heavy and right before I was about to drift off Alex said, “Oh and Lilly. You’re not as worthless as you think. You have something no one else has. You just need to use it to you advantage.” Before I could respond my heavy lids finally closed to darkness.
